About Mochila Wayuu
Authentic Wayuu mochilas (Wayuu bags), hand-woven in Colombia and shipped from the USA.
Our Story: From La Guajira’s Desert to Your Door
Mochila Wayuu began with a gift and a journey. Years ago, Laura’s mother—working as a nurse—traveled to La Guajira, Colombia, where she met Wayuu families along the desert coast. She returned with stories of rancherías and weavers whose art carries memory—and she brought Laura her first Wayuu mochila.
Soon after, Laura and her family drove from Santa Marta to Riohacha, through Uribia, and along unmarked sandy tracks toward Cabo de la Vela—getting stuck in dunes more than once. Wayuu families helped push the truck free, with children translating between Spanish and Wayuunaiki. A local driver, Wilmer, guided them safely to the coast, where they rested in a chinchorro before the long drive back. That kindness—and the hours of work in every stitch—made a lasting impression.
Mochila Wayuu was created to honor that experience. We work directly with Wayuu artisans whenever possible, pay fair, agreed-upon prices, and list accurate measurements for each one-of-a-kind piece. Most bags are sourced in La Guajira; some are woven by Wayuu artisans living in other regions of Colombia. All orders ship from the USA.
What We Stand For
- Direct artisan purchasing (whenever possible) — real relationships, transparent pricing.
- One-of-a-kind pieces — no two mochilas are the same; patterns and color stories are unique.
- Honest sizing & simple care — height, base diameter, and strap/handle length listed for every bag.
- Fast, tracked shipping — handled in the U.S. with 1–2 business-day processing.
Note: We don’t use certification language we can’t substantiate. Our promise is straightforward: respectful sourcing, clear information, and quality you can feel.
How We Source
We acquire inventory directly from Wayuu artisans and trusted vendors we know by name. Quantities are limited, timelines vary by technique, and we publish the exact measurements we take in-house. If an item is pre-order or reserved, it’s clearly labeled.
- Origin: Colombia (primarily La Guajira; also other regions where Wayuu artisans reside).
- Techniques: classic crochet (single-thread & double-thread), tapizada (punch-needle texture), and bordado (embellished/embroidered).
- Natural variations: slight differences in size, tension, and pattern are expected—and celebrated.
How a Wayuu Mochila Is Made
- Yarn & color planning — selecting hues and motifs.
- Base & body crochet — a circular base leads into the cylindrical body.
- Strap or handles — woven or braided to match the design.
- Finishing touches — drawcords, tassels, and, when applicable, embellishments.
- Quality check & measurements — we record height, base diameter, and strap/handle length (end-to-end).
Size & Care
We measure height, base diameter, and strap/handle length (end-to-end) for every bag. Because each piece is handmade, sizes are approximate.
Care: Spot clean with mild soap and cold water; air-dry. Avoid bleach and high heat. For embellished or painted pieces, handle with extra care and avoid abrasion.
